Waupaca, WI | Railroad Bridge to Snowmobile Bridge Conversion

Fall 2023

The reconstruction of an old railroad bridge turned Snowmobile Bridge in Waupaca County, WI, exemplifies smart engineering and successful re purposing. This 64-foot span, now boasting a 12-foot width and a robust 25,000 lb load rating, was achieved through a meticulous design and construction process completed in the Fall of 2023.

Leveraging the existing railroad bridge substructure proved to be a key element in the project's efficiency and sustainability. The new superstructure was engineered for durability and safety, incorporating substantial 8x8 timber girders as the primary support. This framework was then overlaid with a double layer of 2x10 decking, providing a resilient and stable surface capable of withstanding heavy snowmobile traffic. The bridge is rated for 25,000 lbs and is 12' wide, meeting the Wisconsin Trail Bridge Requirements.

A critical component of the design was the integration of a Trail Spec Railing. This addition not only enhances the safety of snowmobile passage but also aligns with trail standards, ensuring a user-friendly experience. The successful completion of this conversion highlights the potential of adapting existing infrastructure to meet evolving recreational needs, delivering a high-quality, load-rated snowmobile bridge for Waupaca County.
