Nestled in the serene landscape of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Hawthorn Hollow Nature Sanctuary & Arboretum offers visitors a peaceful escape into the natural world. In 2023, our team at Custom Bridges and Boardwalks, based nearby in Clinton, WI, had the distinct pleasure of collaborating with the preserve to enhance this experience. We designed and constructed a beautiful, covered overlook, providing a new, sheltered perspective on Hawthorn Hollow's stunning natural beauty.
A Vision for Enhanced Experience
Hawthorn Hollow envisioned a dedicated space where visitors could pause, reflect, and immerse themselves in the surrounding environment – offering protection from the elements while maximizing the connection with nature. The goal was a structure that was not only functional, providing shelter and expansive views, but also aesthetically harmonious with the preserve's tranquil atmosphere and commitment to conservation.
Crafting the Custom Solution
Working closely with the Hawthorn Hollow team, Custom Bridges and Boardwalks brought this vision to life. We engineered and built a spacious 30-foot long by 12-foot-wide covered overlook. Using high-quality, durable materials selected to withstand Wisconsin's variable weather and blend seamlessly into the natural setting, the structure provides ample space and protection from sun and rain. Our design focused on creating unobstructed sightlines while ensuring the structural integrity required for a safe, long-lasting public amenity. Our comprehensive approach ensured the project moved smoothly from concept through final installation.

Since its completion on June 29th, 2023, the Hawthorn Hollow covered overlook has quickly become a favorite spot for visitors. It offers a comfortable, sheltered vantage point perfect for birdwatching, photography, quiet contemplation, or simply soaking in the sights and sounds of the preserve throughout the changing seasons.
